The negative space looks great. I like the highlights on his forehead, nose and finger. The subject has a great face, without seeing his full face one can tell that he has lived a life that might have aged him prematurely. I wonder if the portrait was cropped a bit tighter horizontally so that it was tall and thin if that would make the image more powerful.
What a great use of negative space in this photograph. I really love the way his face and arm seem to be emerging from the dark. I say emerging from the dark and not receding into the dark because his posture gives me a sense that he is moving forward. The gritty texture and the "hidden" parts of the photograph make me feel like this man has a story to tell.
