Did the client give you a brief for this project? I don't mean to sound harsh or anything and I can always appreciate the hardwork that goes into any project however I think this project can be executed in a different manner. I will try my best to critique over all layout as well as each individual page you have shown the community.
Over all design:
I feel that the dotted lines are too thick and does not quite work with the layout itself. How big is the layout? If the dotted lines are to represent threads in the hats you have to understand that the thread is not that thick, you need a more accurate representation of thread.
The Kozie Prery logo definitely needs room to breathe, I feel it is too tight against the boundaries of the design. I would recommend having at least the space of the "K" as a margin to have around the entire logo (primarily the distance between the top of the circle, to the left of the circle and finally at the bottom of the circle.
The navigation does not appeal to me at all, I feel that just like the Kozie Prery logo the navigation is too tight, all the text seems mashed together and you can hardly see the differences between each navigational link.
From reading the content you have I feel like you should really take a spin on the idea of fabrics afterall this is what the company is all about, "100% reclaimed vegan hand made" play off this idea. There are limitless possibilities, after looking at the images you provided my mind is already racing with ideas.
The type face you used here doesn't work at all to be honest. In reality you probably want a serif font for the header titles and a sans-serif font for the content. It is easier to read, as well as easier on the eyes play with the type and you'll understand what I mean.
Index Page:
I don't think there is enough on the index page as it stands right now. There is not much visual information relayed to the viewer of the site. What I mean is that the landing page is the most important page of all pages on the clients website. Meaning, it should showcase and allow the user to navigate through key parts of the site.
As the designer not only do we listen to the needs and vision of our clients but we also take upon ourselves as creatives to go above and beyond what our clients needs and vision is to make something visually appealing while fully functional.
Most clients I work with at the end of the project will always tell me, "Van, this is exactly what I was looking for but even above what I wanted, you took my idea and glorified the possibilites of it's look and feel."
Be a leader by suggesting advice to your clients for additional content that will allow your client to prosper on the web. If they don't know much about social media I would let them know what social media can do and what it can do for their web presence as well.
These features all things that can be added to the main index of the site. As well, you can have feature links to such things as top three caps that are being most purchased.
About Page:
The marginal space above the quote should be larger as to not make it feel like the quote is part of the header and not apart of the content itself. Try using different type for the quote, maybe even use all capital letters as the quote is the first thing you want people to notice and as well read.
I'm not a fan of having text run at that wide of a width either for your content. I feel that you can most likely split the content into two columns and use the second column to show off different caps that the company makes.
I read an article that talks about placing content on a website and although not a strict rule to follow it is good to note that after 14 words the next line break should be added. This is why newspapers are columned the way they are as well as magazines.
Be creative with your header titles, although you can just use text you can also create fabric backgrounds behind your text to make it really stand out. As it looks right now from reading the top to the bottom the header titles seem like more 'quotes' and I do not think that is what you are going for.
If you are going to have a footer on this page then why not implement this across the entire site? Footers are great for mapping out your site, providing links to social networking and can even provide quick contact information to your client from viewers of the site.
Products:
For this page, although you might not be doing any kind of e-commerce, it would educational to look at the many e-commerce sites on the web. Look at how they compile their products pages and you can implement the looks into your clients.
There is a lot of negative space on this page which means you can better use this area if you think about how to properly set this page up. Again this page is a simple fix if you look into how e-commerce products page are displayed.
Where To Buy:
I like the set up of this page a lot more but in over all design there are many inconsistancies with this design. Sometimes you have hardly any marginal space up top before your content begins and sometimes you have way too much.
From what you read that I wrote on the About Page can be applied to this page as well.
I would love to see some more additional work done to this project unless it is already live and if it is congratulations on the completion of a project. :)
This is probably the best critique I've ever received on a GUI.
I'm aware of a lot of the problems, I am resizing the logo to give it more room. And I have a couple other changes to make as well.
The clients budget was extremely small, lets say nothing more than 4 hours of my billable time, so that kind've explains why there is so much lacking. I know this could be done way better, but from the clients sketch, and the content I was provided with, this is what I designed and coded within that time frame.
Oddly enough, the client said she loved it, and we're hoping to go live tonight. Her current site is kozieprery.com if you want to see the difference.
I also code in pure css/html so the difference in just the number of lines in code is vastly improved already.
I do wish I could've put more time into a better design, for this showcases some of my ability, but she loves it, and we're going to run with it. I definably plan on revisiting it when I have the time. I just got another client that wants his site done by Monday...
So I really appreciate the time it took for you to critique this, and if you have future constructive criticism, please don't hesitate. :}
It all makes sense now!! Thanks for you reply and thank you for taking my criticism positively. I'm looking forward to seeing more work from you in the future.
